South Africa offers an abundance of fine golf courses, especially along its scenic coastal route. Starting from the Western Cape Province all the way up to Port Edward in Kwa-Zulu Natal, here’s our top five golf courses along the coast:
1. Steenberg Golf Club (Cape Town, Western Cape)
Unmistakable in its authenticity, Steenberg is a place of textured heritage, vintage wines and world-class golfing. The Steenberg golf course is rated as one of the top three courses to visit in South Africa.
Golf course designer Peter Matovich comments, “I love Steenberg. I can play the course every day; surely that is the hallmark of a great golf course. The different seasons and the wind continually changes the beauty, challenges and options of each hole. This offers a lovely variety and makes it simply most enjoyable and fun to play.”
2. Arabella Country Club (Hermanus, Western Cape)
Named as the best golf course in South Africa, Arabella has been bringing international golf players to discover its magic since 1999. The course is designed by top SA designer Pete Matkovich between the magnificent Kogelberg mountain range and the largest natural lagoon in South Africa, Bot River Lagoon. The Arabella Golf Course has been a tourist attraction for many professionals and celebrities that enjoy the gentleman’s game, including Samuel L. Jackson, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Ronan Keating, Lee Westwood, Tim Clark and Gary Player.
3. Fancourt Hotel, Country Club and Golf Estate (George, Western Cape)
Situated in South Africa’s southern region of the Western Cape Province, The Links at Fancourt is one of Gary Player’s breath-taking designs. It has an exceptional golf academy that houses a TaylorMade Fitment Centre and state-of-the-art teaching facilities, backed up by the expertise of PGA professionals.
4. Durban Country Club (Durban, Eastern Cape)
A course steeped in tradition and history, Durban Country Club is a shot maker’s course that you have to think your way around. Most golfers don’t make use of their driver until well into their round due to the narrowness of the opening holes.
The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, has hosted the South African Open 17 times. Winners on this course include names such as Bob Charles, Gary Player, Bobby Locke, world renowned Ernie Els and Tim Clark.
5. Wild Coast Sun Country Club (Port Edward, Kwa-Zulu Natal)
Located along the coastline of the Indian Ocean and designed by Robert Trent Jones, the Wild Coast Country Club is a rugged beauty of a golf course. Although it is not a very long course, it is by no means an easy one – with its wide fairways it can present a very difficult challenge when the wind comes up.
The signature hole is the par-three thirteenth at 146 metres and is included in Golf Online’s 500 best holes in the world and also one of the best golf courses in South Africa.
